TE MANA WHAKAHAERE KARAREHE

Easy Steps to Responsible Pet Ownership

The Waitākere Ranges is home to many rare and endangered birds, such as the matuku/bittern, tūturiwhatu/dotterel, ōi/grey-faced petrel, pāteke/brown teal and the korora/little blue penguin. Living in this special environment also means an extra responsibility in ensuring pets are well cared for so that they don't cause harm to the native wildlife.

GET RUFFLED - LOVE OUR CATS, SAVE OUR BIRDS

A cat ruffle has been shown to reduce bird catches by up to 50%, as the brightly coloured collar gives birds a "flighting" chance. Use a cat ruffle or jingling bell by day and keep your cat indoors at night. Share your ruffled cat with us on Facebook by using the hashtags #catandbirdlover #waitakcat

CAT CONTAINMENT

The Oscillot® system keeps your cat safe at home. A series of aluminium paddles placed on top of your fence spins if your cat tries to climb over. The system helps keep your cat safe and healthy – as well as protecting wildlife. Oscillot can be installed by most DIYers or your local handyperson. They also have very tall and solid cat posts available to create a stimulating indoor environment for your pet and sell tree guards to prevent your cat from climbing any backyard trees with nesting birds.
