COMMUNITY RESTORES AUCKLAND TRANSPORT RESERVE

A remarkable transformation has taken place in the Auckland Transport Reserve, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Restoration Ruatuna project. What was once a neglected triangle of land overrun with invasive weeds and dying trees has been restored to its former glory, showcasing the power of community-driven conservation.

Located between Victory Road and Warner Park Avenue, the 1-hectare reserve is home to some of Auckland's largest and most significant Puriri trees. However, by 2018, the area was choking under a thick blanket of Jasmine, Ginger, and other invasive species.

Determined to save the trees and restore the ecosystem, members of Restoration Ruatuna embarked on a massive cleanup effort. Armed with hedge clippers, herbicide gel, and unwavering dedication, they tackled the Jasmine and Ginger, painstakingly cutting and spraying the weeds to allow the native trees to breathe again.

The results are staggering. After countless hours of volunteer work, the Jasmine and Ginger have retreated, revealing a thriving understory. Native plantings, funded by Auckland Council and community-driven fundraising efforts, have filled the gaps, attracting native birds and bursting into vibrant Harakeke flowers.

Restoration Ruatuna's success is a testament to the power of community. From planting and weeding days to graphic design donations and local business support, the project has rallied the community around its mission.

"As the Māori proverb says, 'Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari kē he toa takitini' – success is the result of a team effort," said Len Gillman for Restoration Ruatuna. "We're grateful to everyone who has contributed to this project, demonstrating that together, we can achieve remarkable things."

The restored reserve is now a haven for native wildlife, with Tui and other birds flocking to the area. As Restoration Ruatuna continues its vital work, the community is invited to join the effort, ensuring the long-term protection and preservation of this precious urban oasis.
