The government's $32 million national plan to protect kauri from the soil-borne pathogen, Phytophthora agathidicida, was recently launched at a gathering at Arataki Visitor Centre hosted by mana whenua of the Waitākere Ranges, Te Kawerau ā Maki.

The plan has been established to provide a consistent approach for managing the risk of kauri dieback across Aotearoa and encapsulates ten new rules relating to visiting kauri forest, growing kauri and if you have kauri on your land. Most significantly, if you own land with kauri, you are required to report any trees that look unhealthy.

Edward Ashby of Te Kawerau ā Maki and Dr Mels Barton of Kauri Rescue will be hosting a panel discussion at Pestival Out West on Sunday 6th November at Titirangi Community House on kauri in the ranges, and the National Plan (Mahere ā-motu). Follow this link for more information on Pestival and to register.

A new website Tiakina Kauri (Kauri Protection) outlines the plan and provides information on how to go about reporting an unhealthy tree.
