ORATIA & WAIATARUA NATIVE WILDLIFE PROJECT

Who we are

A Catchment Group is a gathering of people who identify with a water catchment. A catchment, or whaitua, is an area of land where rain flows into a common river, lake or other body of water. A healthy water catchment supports local ecosystems.

Our vision is thriving communities and native wildlife in the Oratia Stream catchment.

Our mission is to work with our communities to protect and improve the environment within the Oratia Stream catchment.

Our approach is:

  • Community development; and
  • Providing a voice for nature with local and national Government.

Our principles are:

  • Biological diversity;
  • Community-led solutions; and
  • Partnership with mana whenua.

Our goals are:

  • Stream restoration with native planting;
  • Pest control;
  • A funded coordinator;
  • A sustainable catchment group (expanded into the Lower Oratia Stream Catchment); and
  • An active network of West Auckland catchment groups.

We are an informal group that runs on consensus and “do-ocracy”. We have two main sub-committees:

Anyone is welcome to create a project within the group, provided:

  • it is our catchment;
  • it aligns with our vision, mission, principles and goals; and
  • you participate in the broader project.

We are a sub-committee of the Oratia Ratepayers and Residents Association Incorporated and are a member of the Pest Free Waitakere Ranges Alliance.
