Over winter, and a very wet winter at that, the Karekare community participated in a winter trapping contest put on by Karekare Landcare.
With loads of prizes in the offing, contestants battled it out recording a total of 111 catches on Trap.NZ, over three times more catches than the same time last year. Making this feat even more remarkable is that many of the contestants were children.
The winners in each category were as follows:
- Most predators overall - 13yr old Freddy Cannon
- Second most predators caught - Chris Agnew in the Adult Category and Rosa & Moss Hyman-Rosenberg in the kids category
- Third most predators caught were Gail Nixon in the Adult category and Alice Durban in the kids category
Their prizes included a family pass with Rotorua Canopy Tours, a trip to Tiritiri Matangi with Explore Auckland and a family pass to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari.
Karekare Landcare's next project
Karekare Landcare's Spring project offers the community a chance to drop in for some trapping advice and a trap, or to recycle any unused traps by donating these to the project.
